FAQs

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body. These points are carefully chosen to regulate, unblock, and rebalance the flow of Qi (pronounced "chee"), the vital energy that flows through the body.

By restoring balance and harmony of qi, acupuncture can promote physical, emotional, and mental well-being. It is a safe and effective method rooted in ancient wisdom, used to address a wide range of health concerns and support overall vitality.

What should I expect during an acupuncture session?

We will begin with a consultation, during which I will take time to understand your unique circumstances, lifestyle, health concerns, and treatment goals. This conversation will allow me to tailor the treatment specifically to your needs.

During the session, thin needles are gently inserted into specific points on the body. These points are carefully chosen to address your concerns and promote balance. The aim is to feel a mild, dull ache sensation at these points, which is a normal and positive response. Most needles are removed shortly after this sensation is achieved, but in some cases, they may remain in place for about 20 minutes to enhance the treatment's effectiveness.

I will be with you throughout the session.

In follow-up sessions, the structure is split into two halves. The first haf is used to explore any changes you've noticed, address new or ongoing concerns, and assess how the treatment is impacting you. The remainder of the session focuses on a customised treatment designed to support the issues we've discussed and to guide you toward improved well-being.

How frequently should I come?

To establish a strong foundation, it is recommended to start with weekly sessions for the first 4–6 treatments. This consistency helps build momentum and allows the body to respond effectively to the treatment.

As your symptoms improve and your body begins to maintain balance for longer periods, we will gradually extend the time between sessions. Ultimately, the goal is to transition to maintenance treatments, coming four to five times a year, ideally at the change of each season.

Seasonal treatments are particularly beneficial because as nature shifts, so do we. These sessions help your body adapt to the seasonal changes, ensuring you remain balanced and aligned throughout the year.

How many treatments will I need?

Response times to treatment can vary. As I treat the root cause of imbalance, it can take time to return to balance, especially when working with long-term conditions. Most people notice a difference within the first few treatments. The response to treatment is cumulative, so not leaving too much time between the initial treatments is key.

It is recommended that you start with four to six treatments and review progress.

Are the needles reused?

No, all needles are single use, sterile, and safely disposed of after each session.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable, loose clothing, if possible, to make access to points easier. Tight clothing, such as leggings and sports bras, is not recommended.

Why do you ask that no make up or perfume is worn?

Chinese medicine relies on subtle diagnostic cues to fully understand a patient's diagnosis. These cues can include the natural appearance of the skin and the scent of the body. Wearing makeup or perfume can mask these important details, potentially interfering with diagnosis.

By coming to your session without these products, you help ensure that your treatment plan is as tailored and effective as possible. It’s all about creating the clearest picture of your health to tailor the treatments specifically to you.
